Comments Off on Steps to Lower Your Home’s Cooling Costs

During the summer months, temperatures rise steadily, and it can get quite uncomfortable. Once the temperatures get to the 80’s, you have no other option but to turn on the air conditioning unit. Although the cooling system can make you comfortable and happy, it may hurt your wallet badly. However, it is possible to be comfortable while spending less. Consider these tips on how to reduce cooling expenses.

1. Ensure you filter is clean

When was the last time you checked your filter or replaced it? If it has been a while, it may have accumulated a lot of dirt and dust, and might be the reason for your high energy bills. A dirty filter results in reduced air flow. Therefore, you should examine it often and keep it clean. If you have trouble recalling, just check the thermostat as it has reminder lights that change color when the filter requires replacing.

2. Maintain ducts and vents

When using a central air conditioning unit, you should ensure that the ducts are adequately insulated. It is also important to ensure that there are no leaks or holes in the ducts. Do so at least once a year. You can use a duct tape to fix the problem temporarily, but eventually you should hire an expert to fix them. As for the rooms that you do not use often such as the extra bedroom, ensure that the doors are shut. This helps in saving energy.

3. Reduce heat sources

Natural light is nice, but not during the summer months. The sun rays can easily raise the temperature inside your house; thus resulting in higher energy bills. Therefore, close the drapes and blinds. Buy blackout curtains to reduce the exterior heat. Baking, cooking and using other heat-intensive apparatus might raise temperatures. Thus, limit these operations during the hottest hours.
